1. Why are there two
wicks in the candles?
We use 2 wicks so the candles burn evenly and release the maximum amount of
fragrance from the first time you light the candle right down to the end.
2. What is the burn
time on the candles?
This is a very tricky question because there are so many variables that come
into play when burning any candles, such as location (drafts, wind, ceiling
fans), amount of time of continuous burn, proper wick trimming, etc. Some
fragrances have ingredients that create a faster burn time than others (cinnamon
can burn a bit more quickly). Speaking very generally, you can get about 80-120
hours of burn time from a jar, sometimes much more. It's
always best to follow the burn instructions on the back of every jar to get the
maximum results and safety from your candles.
3. What is the burn
time on the votives?
Again, this is a very tricky question because there are so many variables that
come into play when burning any candles, such as location (drafts, wind, ceiling
fans), amount of time of continuous burn, proper wick trimming, etc. Votives can
burn differently in various votive jars and holders. Since the top layer of the
candle becomes a liquid as it burns, we've gotten the best success from using a
holder that fits the votive snugly. Speaking very generally, if you use a
tight-fitting holder, you can get about 15-20 hours of burn time.
4. I've noticed some
black on the jars, is this soot?
The “soot” that most people are concerned about is the “soot” that can
come
from using paraffin in candles (because of oily residue). All items that are
burned (including our alternative candles) must give off some percentages of soot.
The small percentage of soot that might be seen on an alternative candle would
be carbon from the wicks or because the flame has gotten too high and the wick
is in need of trimming. Some scents also give off small amounts of soot.
5. Where are the
candles and other products made?
All of our products are made at the corporate office, warehouse, and
manufacturing plant located in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.
6. Are the
ingredients in the candles all natural?
Our wax is made up of all natural materials, but we do not use natural scents in
the majority of our candles. It is our opinion that most natural scents and
essential oils do not produce as good a scent, nor do they last as long as synthetic
scents. Most of our scents are made specifically for our alternative wax formula,
and in the cases where we deem that a natural scent can function at the same
level as a synthetic, we use a natural scent.
*Note: Our main goal
was to address soot concerns among “mainstream” candle buyers and their
candles. We were not looking to develop a candle for the much smaller “all
natural” market-place.
7. Is
this candle a
100% soy candle?
Our original formula was 100% soy, but we found that soy was NOT the best
ingredient from which to develop an alternative candle. The reason is that 100% soy
does NOT hold enough scent to create a strongly scented candle. When we designed a
strongly scented soy candle, we found that scent actually rose to the top of the
candle, forming a puddle at the top.
The proprietary
formula we currently use is a formula specifically designed for our candle's
needs (clean burning and also strongly scented) and is comprised of vegetables
and other natural, renewable resources.
In our opinion,
although soy has the benefits of clean burning and warm water clean up, our
blend has those benefits PLUS it allows us to make our candle one of the strongest
scented candles in the market!
8. Are
the wicks lead free and self-trimming?
The wicks are lead free and also core free (no zinc) and are made from 100%
cotton. Although our wicks are considered self trimming we still recommend that
you trim the wicks to between 1/8 and 1/4 inch at all times. If your flame is
higher than an inch, it's time to trim your wick. (Burn instructions
recommend that you NEVER burn a candle continuously for more than 3 hours!)
9. Will leaving
candles in extreme heat cause any problems?
Storing your candles in your car or anyplace where they can be exposed to extreme
heat can cause the following situations to occur:
Extreme heat can
cause the candle to melt slightly, but it will reform itself once it is no
longer being exposed to that heat. If candles are stored for a long period of
time in extreme heat (100 degrees or more) and the storage area is unventilated,
you can experience the following:
(a) candle melting,
(b) the candles can lose some of their scent, or (c) the candles can become slightly
discolored.
Do NOT allow the
candles to be exposed to sunlight while in storage, as it can discolor the
candles.
10. Will leaving
candles in extreme cold cause any problems?
You can experience the following if you expose your candles to extreme cold (20
degrees or less):
(a) if your candles
are stored in a cold place, you may notice that the scent coming from the
unburned candle will not be as strong when you open the jar. That will not
affect the scent when the candle is burned, and you will also notice that the
scent will return to full strength when brought back to normal conditions.
(b)
the glass container holding the candle can become more brittle while cold and
cases of candles should not be mishandled, as it can cause breakage of the glass
under those conditions.
11. How long do the
soap bars last?
It would depend on the time you spend in the shower, what you use it for and if
you left it standing in water after leaving the shower. Most people have told us
that the bar lasts a lot longer than any cleansing bar they have ever used!
12. Why does the
company recommend we NOT use electric candle warmers with these candles?
We use a 2 wick system with a safety seal at the end of the wick. The
seal is metal. With two wicks the amount of metal at the base of the candle can
pull in too much heat and break the glass container.
13.
Do you have unscented candles?
Yes, we have an
unscented candle for those who just prefer the ambience of candlelight without
the fragrance, or for those with severe breathing problems. However, try a
scented candle first -- quite often, it's the chemicals in their formula, or the
soot, that is causing your problems. Many people who have breathing problems
find that they have no problems with our uniquely-formulated scented gourmet candles!
14.
I'm not allowed to have an open flame in my home/office/apartment/dorm.
No problem! While our melts can certainly be used with the tea light burners, we
have something even better: an
electric simmer pot that heats melts (or
"tarts") using a 40-watt lightbulb (which is included). The melts are very strongly
scented (even more highly scented than our jars) and are the perfect solution. They, too, clean up with no mess, unlike
the old potpourri pots you used to fuss with!
Our electric simmer
pot is perfect for dorms, nursing homes, schools, and offices. No more tea
lights -- just wondrous fragrance!

Is there anything I should be aware of that might impact candle fragrances?
Here's a story that recently came in: "I just lit a Night Before Christmas candle and it wasn't very fragrant. Then it dawned on me -- we had
moved the air cleaner to a different spot in the living room where I normally
burn the candles. I moved the candle to the kitchen and could smell it a little
better. I shut off the air cleaner and now the scent is filling the entire
house."
So if you have an air cleaner or ionic air purifier, you should be aware of its
impact on home fragrance!
16.
Do you have aromatherapy candles?
I'll let Megan of Simply Herbal Creations answer this one: "I'm an
herbalist and aromatherapist -- on the aromatherapy question, our candles are not scented with
essential oils, but rather fragrances. There is a tremendous difference. While
scents in general have an overall effect on us, essential oils actually have
healing qualities (really AMAZING healing qualities)! Essential oils are not the
best choice when wanting to add scent to something such as a candle because they
are extremely volatile (evaporative properties) and hence wouldn't give us the
incredible, long-lasting effects our candles have."
Have a question that
is not answered here? All you have to do is ask -- .
Try a
perfect candle -- it may be later than you think!
